Call for Readers and Editors

Join our team! Vita Poetica is seeking colleagues for the volunteer positions of Reader, Visual Arts Editor, Interviews Editor, Reviews Editor, and Contemplative Practices Editor. (Click on links to see the journal section these positions oversee.) We are a small, new nonprofit organization with a mission to connect artists of faith and enliven spiritual conversations through the arts. Individuals with a heart for building community and a desire to engage more deeply with the arts are especially encouraged to get in touch.

Each position entails a commitment of 6-8 hours per month, with some months being busier than others. Currently, Reader positions are volunteer, and Editor positions receive a modest stipend of $50 each quarter as a small token of our appreciation. There is potential for increase as our organization develops. All positions require familiarity with our mission and with our quarterly online journal, which publishes work at the intersection of art, faith, and spirit. Please note that readers and editors are ineligible for the publication of their creative work in the journal but are welcome to contribute interviews, reviews, and contemplative practices in conjunction with the respective section editors.

Readers evaluate creative writing submissions for quality and appropriate fit, then make recommendations and collaborate with editors to select work for publication. We’re particularly looking for readers with experience in poetry.

The Visual Arts Editor is responsible for seeking and reviewing art submissions, corresponding with artists, and preparing visual arts features for publication. As the Visual Arts Editor may work with artists not always comfortable with writing, strong writing skills are preferred for this position, but support is also available from our editors.

The Interviews Editor will work alongside our current Interviews Editor to manage the journal’s Interviews section. This includes conducting 1-2 interviews per issue with artists of all disciplines whose work spans the intersection of art and faith. As appropriate, the Interviews Editors may also invite qualified individuals to serve as guest interviewers. Some editing of interview transcripts involved.

The Reviews Editor is responsible for maintaining an up-to-date list of potential review titles in various genres and disciplines (books, movies, events, etc.) that would be of interest to our audience. Some familiarity with media pertaining to the arts and faith scene is preferred, but input from our editors and outside industry professionals is also encouraged. In addition to editing the 1-2 reviews published per issue, the editor will correspond with publishers and PR associates to arrange for books to be mailed to reviewers or for press coverage as relevant. Optionally, the editor may also choose to review works if desired.

The Contemplative Practices Editor manages our journal's section of guided meditations. This includes seeking qualified contributors in a variety of creative disciplines and contemplative / spiritual backgrounds. This is a unique feature of our journal that blends contemplation with creativity. Strong communication skills preferred, as the editor will work with contributors to develop ideas and will edit the pieces for a fitting tone and style, with support available from our editors if desired.

Applications are preferred by June 15 but are accepted on a rolling basis until filled. Those interested should submit, via Submittable, a resume and cover letter introducing themselves and sharing why the position appeals to them. The application process requires a free Submittable account. If you need any help with the process, please email hello@vitapoetica.org.
